x = 691, y = 692

x = 692, y = 693

Not sufficient

(2)

x = 693, y = 694

Only combination possible, so sufficient

Answer - B

but they haven't mentioned that x and y are distinct integers... that's why I chose E. In many questions I have seen in the past, the absence of the word 'distinct' is usually taken quite strictly (and if I am not wrong, those questions use 'x' and 'y' too). Can someone please explain to me why we overlooked the possibility that x and y are 1 integer. Thanks

Five possible values {691,692,693,694, 695} and only two variable x and y
Many combinations of these values for x and y are possible
INSUFFICIENT

(2) 692 < x < y< 695
Two possible values 693,694
additionally y has to be the bigger than x since y>x (this condition also makes sure that x and y are unique)
so y=694 and x =693
SUFFICIENT

ANSWER IS B

In the question it is mentioned that 692<x<y<695
x<y it is only possible when they are distinct
if they are not distinct it cannot be x<y it would be x=y.

(1) NOT SUFFICIENT

We know values cannot be 690 and 696, but that leaves 691-695 as choices for values of x and y

(2) SUFFICIENT

692 and 695 are eliminated as options, leaving us with 693 and 694. We know x < y, so 693 +694 = 1387
