x>3 or x<-1

x must be positive so only the first range is acceptable
sufficient

2) x>5 or x<-1

x must be positive so only the first range is acceptable

This seems a bit easy for 600-700.

Answer is D.

Just plug in 3 for 1: that makes the left side equal to 4. so it has to be at least 3.00000000000001. etc...

2: same thing. Or u could just square both sides.

lets see X>0...

x^2-2x+1>4
x(x-2)>3 ..OK so x>0..we can see that x has to be greater than 3..for the inequality to hold!

x^2-4x+4>9
x(x-4)>5; X>0 has to be greater than 5...sufficient!

I will just try and plug

1) x is positive, so let's try 2, 3, and 4.

(2-1)^2 > 4 ---> 1 > 4 - shows that x > 2
(3-1)^2 > 4 ---> 4 > 4 - shows that x > 3 (this is what we want so far)
(4-1)^2 > 4 ---> 9 > 4 - shows that x > 3 as well. Accept

Solution is now either A or D.

2) x is positive, so let's try 3, 4, and 5

(3-2)^2 > 9 ----> 1 > 9 - shows that x > 3 (this is what we want so far)
(4-2)^2 > 9 ----> 4 > 9 - shows that x > 3 as well. Accept.

Answer D.

1) (x-1)^2 > 4 => x-1>2 or x-1<-2 since x>0 thus x-1>2 i.e. x>3 suff

2) (x-2)^2 > 9 => x-2>3 or x-2<-3 since x>0 thus x-2>3 i.e. x>5 suff
