Impact of two year gap and Profile Evaluation [#permalink] New post 18 Sep 2011, 10:57
My Profile:
-Indian/male/28
-hold undergrad and post grad (Electrical Engg) from IIT Madras
-GPA 3
-2.3 yrs experience in Deloitte Consulting (Telecom & technology vertical, Strategy & Operation)
-1.3 yrs experience in Telenor (A Multinational telecom player) as a business analyst to business head of two states
-5 months in a medium size mobile VAS player
-Just started with a similar sized company in online and mobile advertising space as a business analyst
- GMAT: 710 (M 50, V35, 5)
- Good amount of Extra curricular activities in college (College captain for music for 2 yrs, national social service for 2 yrs, Extra mural lecture coordinator etc) but not much work after the college
-Helped the company for campus recruitment
- Organizers (city chapter) for Global panIIT meet which happens once in a year in US or India in alternate years
-Strong academic performance throughout the school
-Took counseling sessions for poor kids (for short duration)

My questions
-I did my schooling from a small town and then prepared for my college for two years. How severally it will affect my application?
-I hope gap of 2-3 months gap between two jobs does not hurt ? Am I correct ?
-I am aiming college from 4th to 15th rank. How realistic is the aim?
- Any suggestions on the split of High/Medium/Low schools?
-I am thinking about targeting Cornell, Duke, Kellogg, Darden and Yale. Please comment on my chances there
-Coming from highly competitive Indian male engineer pool, should I apply to only 1 or 2 schools in R1 and then rewrite the GMAT before R2
- Though I was quite active in extra-curricular activities during my college days, but I have not done much since then (2007). Will the previous work will be counted or it's only the recent work that does?

Would be great if I could get some help.
Thanks in advance,
G

-I did my schooling from a small town and then prepared for my college for two years. How severally it will affect my application?

Could be good or bad depending on how you couch it. If you can make it an interesting story and use it to illustrate how it impacted you as a person, could be great.

-I hope gap of 2-3 months gap between two jobs does not hurt ? Am I correct ? Again, depends on how you explain it. If you sat on the sofa eating twinkies and watching reality TV, it won't be impressive. If you traveled, or enriched your experience somehow, could be great. See a theme developing here? Ultimately it's all in how you cast your vision and demonstrate the core elements of a good applicant in your stories, namely leadership, teamwork, innovation and maturity.

-I am aiming college from 4th to 15th rank. How realistic is the aim? I think you are wise to go for schools in this range, but be aware that you are in a big applicant pool and must take extra measures to differentiate yourself.

- Any suggestions on the split of High/Medium/Low schools? you should have a couple in each category to be safe if you have the time and patience to apply to six schools.

-I am thinking about targeting Cornell, Duke, Kellogg, Darden and Yale. Please comment on my chances there--I think these are great schools to target, but again, given that you are in a very competitive pool, you should also look for a couple a little more off the radar as a backup plan.

-Coming from highly competitive Indian male engineer pool, should I apply to only 1 or 2 schools in R1 and then rewrite the GMAT before R2 an additoinal 20 or 30 points on the GMAT will likely not make a huge difference. You have a great GMAT score and should now be focused on your applications instead. It would be far better to take that extra time to either better your R1 applications, or perhaps squeeze in another couple of schools.

- Though I was quite active in extra-curricular activities during my college days, but I have not done much since then (2007). Will the previous work will be counted or it's only the recent work that does? They will want to see that you are still involved in your community, so see if you can find some organizations or opportunities that you can impact over the next 12 months. Ideally, these activities would tie into something you've done in the past, or at least into some sort of passion you have.
