Improved technology and equipment often result in fewer [#permalink]
08 Apr 2010, 06:37
Question Stats:
84% (01:59) correct
15% (00:45) wrong based on 33 sessions
Improved technology and equipment often result in fewer injuries during high-risk activities such as rock climbing and scuba diving. But participant education also plays a large role in reducing the number of injuries sustained during these activities. People who are poorly trained in these activities run a much higher risk of injury even if provided with the latest and best equipment. Which of the following can be properly inferred from the information above? • Training is a more important safety factor than equipment in high-risk activities. • People who are properly trained in their activities do not sustain injuries. • The safety benefits of the latest equipment can be offset by inadequate preparation. • Rock climbing and scuba diving are more risky than any other activities. • People with the latest equipment often neglect proper training.

I see A and C both are good candidates.
A)Training is a more important safety factor than equipment in high-risk activities. >> Passage says "But participant education also plays a large role ...." So training is most important. C)The safety benefits of the latest equipment can be offset by inadequate preparation. >> From passage "People who are poorly trained in these activities run a much higher risk of injury even if provided with the latest and best equipment..." So the 'inadequate' word fits well with 'poorly trained'.
IMO it is C.

Lack of either increases risks. • Rock climbing and scuba diving are more risky than any other activities. >> Out of scope.• People with the latest equipment often neglect proper training. >> This may be the reason why the writer writes such passage, but not the inference.

IMO C as A: It never said which one is more important or better than the other B: In question we are only concerned about higher risk D: Same as A E: Out of scope

Ans should be C. The conclusion of the question is stated in the last statement. C restates the same in different words.

Between A & C. I think is C. The rest looks pretty extreme. Wats OA?

tech/equip ----> lower injuries better education ----> also lower injuries if no education then higher risk of injury even with equip • Training is a more important safety factor than equipment in high-risk activities. (no comparison's happening in argument) • People who are properly trained in their activities do not sustain injuries. ( do not is extreme) • The safety benefits of the latest equipment can be offset by inadequate preparation. ( this is pretty much what I paraphrased) • Rock climbing and scuba diving are more risky than any other activities. (other activities are not talked abt in the argument) • People with the latest equipment often neglect proper training (nothing regarding neglection in premise) I think C is a pretty good ans choice

Agree with C. "A" was close, but the statement never says that training is better than equipment, only that both play a large role.

OA is C. B/w A and C, C is the best. In the passage, there is no comparison b/w training and equipments but you can easily see that training plays a large role which is prephrased in option C says - The safety benefits of the latest equipment can be offset by inadequate preparation.

Here its between A and C Although many of u say its C can anyone plz explain why its not A? Last sentence states that ". People who are poorly trained in these activities run a much higher risk of injury even if provided with the latest and best equipment" --- which implies that without training people are at a high risk even while using latest equipment. So it can be inferred that training is more important safety factor than equipment. Also the whole argument is taking the position that equipment reduces the risk but training is the one that is more important can anyone give the explanation y A is wrong?

My answer is A and I understand that OA is C. Below is my understanding - C says "inadequate preparation" - which is unclear. Instead of "inadequate preparation" if the statement had mentioned "poor training", I would have picked C. Any takers?

I think they are synonims, therefore that will answer your question. I am a non native English speaker, so maybe there is some meaning I am missing.

@capricorn369 and bull78Inadequate preparation has much wider scope than poor training.Inadequate preparation can have many factors including lack of training etc.. even though, the AC-(C) is saying that the safety benefits of latest equipment is OFFSET by inadequate preparation, it is giving you a more wider scope to prove it correct. Offset-nullify the effect

So, still don't agree with C. What is the source? Cheers GODSPEED

IMO C. A => one is more important than other, no not explicitly mentioned. Key to answering questions is to watch out for quality words like more, less, always, never

+1 C I think that in "must be true" questions like this, you have to be very conservative. Choice A goes beyond of what is actually stated in the argument.
