Why is D incorrect? D is the only one which uses correct passive voice.

What is the source of this problem?

Cool. The GMAT prep 2.0 you mean? Or the additional 400 questions that they are giving away for 30 something bucks?

Thanks for posting the question. +1 to you! :)

Yes, GMAT prep 2.0 with the additional question package for 25 bucks. Well worth is instead of buying the new book.

Also there was a problem in answer choice C and now it is in fact right.

We must decide one thing regarding the status of the 17000 artifacts before we proceed further. The question is whether the ship sank with the artifacts on board or were they found at the time of recovery. By virtue of being placed just next to the sinking, we have to construe that the artifacts were there on board at the point of sinking. Let us see which choice carries this essence faithfully.

A) In 1982, archaeologists recovered Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose, which, having sunk in 1545, with more than 17,000 artifacts on board, ---- The use of the phrase having sunk leaves the sub – clause into a fragment

B)Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose sank in 1545 and, recovered by archaeologists in 1982, they found more than 17,000 artifacts on board, ---very ungrammatical construction with the first part in active voice and the second part in passive and a run-on with another full fledged clause without a proper conjunction
C)When Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose sank in 1545 and, recovered by archaeologists in 1982, they found more than 17,000 artifacts on board,--- When did they find the 17000 artifacts? At the time of sinking or at recovery? If it is at the time of recovery, then it is altered intent. In addition the sentence poor active voice and passive voice combo; it should be was recovered. Else, it will mean that the ship recovered something.

D) Having sunk in 1545, Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose was recovered in 1982 by archaeologists, finding more than 17,000 artifacts on board, with—If the archeologists found the art treasure in 1982, then it is against the grain of original intent. The comma after archeologists is also problematic
E)Finding more than 17,000 artifacts on board, Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose, which sank in 1545, was recovered in 1982 by archaeologists and it had—misplaced modification The ship did not find the art pieces. The archeologists did

So we are back to square one . May be reluctantly D is passable.

yes there are many typos i guess.. See the non-underlined part isn't the correct idiom From A to B and not From A and B?

Does the s/w says From A and B?

cheers

The official answer for this is C.

I am ok with eliminating the rest but confused with C.

@daagh: shouldnt there be a connector after the comma? Because the sentence starting 'everything from... ' looks to be a dependent clause.

Choice C looks best of all.

Just one confusion, .....and, was ..... what is the purpose of "and,"

Hi Sdas,

Here is the underlined part of C

C)When Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 and, was recovered in 1982, archaeologists found more than 17,000 artifacts on board,

I think you're correct, the sentence would work with or without the 'and'. But as there are so many issues with the other answers, this extra word is not what's being tested...

Cheers,

James
