In 1986, the city of Los Diablos had 20 days on which air pollution reached unhealthful amounts and a smog alert was put into effect. In early 1987, new air pollution control measures were enacted, but the city had smog alerts on 31 days that year and on 39 days the following year. In 1989, however, the number of smog alerts in Los Diablos dropped to sixteen. The main air pollutants in Los Diablos are ozone and carbon monoxide, and since 1986 the levels of both have been monitored by gas spectrography.

Which of the following statements, assuming that each is true, would be LEAST helpful in explaining the air pollution levels in Los Diablos between 1986 and 1989?
(A) The 1987 air pollution control measures enacted in Los Diablos were put into effect in November of 1988.
(B) In December of 1988 a new and far more accurate gas spectrometer was invented.
(C) In February of 1989, the Pollution Control Board of Los Diablos revised the scale used to determine the amount of air pollution considered unhealthful.
(D) In 1988 the mayor of Los Diablos was found to have accepted large campaign donations from local industries and to have exempted those same industries from air pollution control measures.
(E) Excess ozone and carbon monoxide require a minimum of two years to break down naturally in the atmosphere above a given area.

I believe it is (D). It does not explain why the pollution levels dropped as per measurement. It just says that the certain idustries were exempt.

Between A and D I choose A.

In D the exemption of some industries may be a reason for the increased pollution level in 1988.

The date of the plans looks little irrelevant here. Please explain why you think A add up to the info.

Hi Bhai,

The regulations were put into effect in 1988. Hence the pollution went uncontrolled till then. Once the controls were in effect the pollution levels dropped in 1989.

(A) give a great explanation for the events.

D looks the least worst.

A explains the change quite well.

I think you should npot worry too much about these kinds of questions especially if these are from LSAT. The reasoning expected in LSAT is somewhat different. I have one suggestion for you.
It is good to practice LSAT CRs intially to increase speed and find faults in the argument. As you close in on your final phase of preperation stay away from these.
In my experience I used to ace most of LSAT CRs and get 3-4 wrong on GMAT CRs. The GMAT CR is pretty straight forward.

I wish I could explain the anatomy of GMAT and LSAT. I will in near future. Use LSAT with caution.

The problem (D) is same as problem with (B). I really could not differentiate much. Lawyers reasoning is not same as a business executive or analysts reasoning.

The same problem lies with parallel reasoning and philosophical questions. GMAT you will not see many of those questions.

I think that this is just a poorly written question regardless of its source. I do not think that LSAT takers and GMAT takers are expected to reason that much differently on questions of this nature- after all they come from broadly similar backgrounds.

guys, I chose D, but I feel B might be the correct answer since "the gas spectrometer was invented" doesn't mean "it is put into use", if that's the case, B is irrelevant.

I would have answered with D...but I see DLMD's point and why B is the answer.
