1977 ______________________ 1987_____________________________1997

100x _______________________160x ______________________________300

From F.S 1, we know that\frac{(300-100x)}{100x}*100 equals 200. We can find out the value of x and consequently the percentage increase from 1987 to 1997. No need to calculate.

From F.S 2, we know that 100x = 100 . Thus again, we can directly calculate the value as required.

Here's another way to look at it:

According to s1, the number of women went up by 200%. That's the same as tripling (original + 2*original), so we know there were originally 100 women. We have the same info as in s2.

For anyone who's not comfortable from there:

If there were 100 women in '77, a 60% increase would mean 160 women in '87. Now we just need to know the percent increase from 160 to 300. Since this is DS, there's no need to actually solve, but we'd just do difference/original:

140/160 = 14/16 = 7/8 = 87.5%

Given in question statement,

1977-----------------------1987-----------------------------1997
X..................................Y=1.3X..................................300

We have to find Y to get the answer i.e. % increase from 1987 to 1997. Also as this is DS question,
we no need to find the exact value of Y, if it computable in given condition, answer is Yes and if not, answer is NO

Statement 1:

X..................................Y............................................2X

From question statement and statement 1:

X= 150, and Y = 195 ......Yes Correct answer should A or D

Statement 2:

X = 100........................Y..................................300

From question statement and statement 2:

X= 100, and Y = 130 ......Yes Correct answer should B or D

So correct answer is D

Careful, vipinktyagi. "Increased by 200%" means that the new value is equal to the original plus 200% of the original. In other words, the new value is 3x the old value, not 2x.

Note that if we got X=150 from statement 1 and X=100 from statement 2, we'd know something had gone wrong. The two statements will *never* contradict one another.
