"B"

(3/4)*40 = 30 milk
10 water

30/(10+x) = 2.....30 = 20+2x....x = 5

milk in 40 litre=40*(3/4)=30lit
water in 40 litre=10litre

let x lit of water be added to it
milk/water=2/1<=>30/10+x=2/1<=>x=5(ans)

With a 3:1 ratio in 40 liters, imply 30 liters of milk and 10 liters of water.

Using the options

(a) Lets add "6 liters" of water. With 30 liters of milk and (10+6) 16 liters of water, the ratio is 30:16 = 15:8. So this answer is wrong

(b) Lets add "5 liters" of water. With 30 liters of milk and (10+5) 15 liters of water, the ratio is 30:15 = 2:1.... Bingo... here is our answer.

No need to check any other answers, since in GMAT only one answer is true. :-D

If you want a quickie. Her is how it is. You can prove it.

The raios are a: b = 3:1, we need c:d = 2: 1. and originally X = 40

The amount of water to be added = X(ad-bc)/(c(b+a))

= 40(3-2)/(2(3+1) = 5
