In a fix - need help in choosing recommenders!! [#permalink] New post 15 Dec 2012, 00:10
Hi,

I plan to apply in the round 2 to B-Schools for the Fall 2013 intake. Here is my brief profile.

1) Age: 28, Male
Nationality: India
Resident in the UK

2) Educational Background:
Doon School, Dehrarun (ISC, BFS 94%)
BA Hons in Mathematics from St Stephen's College, Delhi University :73% (first division)

3) Work experience:
2006 - 2007: Reckitt Benckiser CHQ (Slough, UK): Information Systems Grad Business Analyst
The first international placement from Delhi University

Nov 2007 - quit to start my company (with own savings) - deals with Education & Recruitment Consulting
(Overseas admission to UK, University collaborations, and jobs placements in UK)
Operated from London and opened main office in Delhi. Other branch offices in Kanpur & Amritsar.
(company still running - though not focusing on this business too much these days as busy with another venture)

Oct 2009 - bought an English language training school in the UK (again with funds earned from Company 1)
School in UK teaches students from over 50 nationalities.

Expanded business and now have opened a branch of the school in Kazakhstan. Expanding operations in Kz and now teach over 500 students every week!

4) Extracurriculars:

Most ECA were during school / college time:
Sports: Was school/college team for football, athletics, college chess captain, Dehradun districts gold in Discuss throw (if don't know if any of this counts!)
Not been playing sports recently!
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

5) Short/Long term goals:
Continue to build & grow companies.
Hope to continue to be a part of my existing company too. (have a business partner - who may have to work extra hard for sometime!)
Streamline my father's business as well. He is in the textile industry (in Varanasi)

6) Schools I'm applying to:
1: Harvard, Stanford, Insead, Haas, MIT, LBS

7) GMAT: 720 (94%)
(V 38 - 84%, 49 - 83%)
AWA: 5.0 (57%), IR: 5.0 (52%)

Now I am in a major fix in deciding who to choose as my references.
- I have had no supervisor since 2007
- My clients are students (who are studying to learn English)

So far I was thinking of getting one recommendation letter from my business partner. However, can not decide on whom to get the other two from.

I have some agents who are working with me - but they are based internationally - Ukraine / Saudi Arabia etc.
- now not very keen on letting them know that I am applying for an MBA
- also, they won't be able to write in English as English is their second language.

Please suggest on what I can do? I am also vert short on time!!

Also, what are my chances to get into a one of these schools.

Many thanks.

You are competitive at your target programs and are applying appropriately, but there are not safeties there.

Regarding the letters of recommendation, your partner is a good idea. You may also want to ask your accountant or attorney, if either of those professionals have worked closely with you. Important suppliers or investors could also be good recommenders. You might be interested in The President Wrote My Letter of Recommendation!.

BTW, lack of English should not stop an otherwise enthusiastic, knowledgeable recommender from writing your recommendation. Just get a certified translator to translate the letter.

Best,
Linda
