In a km race, A gives B a start of 20 seconds and beats him by 40m. However, when he gives B a start of 25 seconds they finish in a dead heat. What is A’s speed in m/sec?

(1) 12.5 m/sec
(2) 20 m/sec
(3) 8 m/sec
(4) 10 m/sec
(5) 14 m/sec

4)...

in the first run A beats B by 40m with a headstart of 20s
in the second run A gives B a headstart of 5s more and it ends in a draw. that means B ran the 40m in 5s. so his speed is 8m/s. 1000m/8s/m= 125s-25s=100s. A needs 100s to run 1000m. so its 10m/s.

In case where A gives 20 sec and wins by 40m. Sa = speed of A Sb speed of B.

1000/Sa = (1000- (20 * Sb) -40) /Sb

In case 2 - 1000/Sa = (1000 -25 * Sb)/Sb

Sa is 10 m /sec.
