D for me also
A and B can be eliminated because they use present perfect form which is not needed here. The sentence, written as such, means that women had a narrow range of choices during that period and beyond. Yet, the sentence wants to refer the narrow range of choices only back to that period of time so use of present perfect is wrong.
C) changes the meaning of the sentence by putting "typically" at the beginning. It sounds as if Mary Baker "typically" became [...]
D) "typically" is well placed here as it conveys the idea that it was the women who were "typically" characterized by the narrow range of choices. Use of simple past tense "had" is appropriate as it means that as the narrow range of choices plagued women, Mary Baker still became[...]
E) Again, suffers from problem of misplaced modifier in C
