In a period of time when women typically have had a narrow range of choices, Mary Baker Eddy became a distinguished writer and the founder, architect, and builder of a growing church.

(A) In a period of time when women typically have - 'have had' is present perfect and is used to connect the past to the present which is not needed here. We have 'became' later in the sentence...hence simple past 'had' is needed.
(B) During a time in which typically women have - same as A
(C) Typically, during a time when women - "Typically' is an adverb and should modify verbs
(D) At a time when women typically [had] - CORRECT
(E) Typically in a time in which women - same as C

Eliminate options with "have had" and find the correct placement of "typically"

My pick is D
