D reads - The discus used in track competition, once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, but now .. Here.. the BUT after the comma is redundant. usually you should be able to take stuff between the bracing commas and the sentence should still make sense (usually.. and these are calling the comma hugs per some girl instructor in KAPLAN). So lets take off the commas and check.. The discus used in track competition,..,but now lined with lead around the perimeter, thereby improving stability in flight and resulting in longer throws. That is a run on sentence or some sort of improper grammar construct. Right? thats why D is out. C is correct because of the proper placement of modifier which all the other choices miss out. If you like the post.. KUDOS me! Thanks -Hemanth

Two errors in the original sentence: 1. Verb tense: used previously ........ is concentrated 2. Modifier: the weight of the discuss used .......... but now is lined In a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition is concentrated in a metal center, but now it is lined with lead around the perimeter, thereby improving stability in flight and resulting in longer throws.
A. In a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition is concentrated in a metal center, but now it is Out due to error - 1 B. According to a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition was concentrated in a metal center, but now it is Out due to error - 2 . Implies weight of the discuss was used and now the weight is modified. C. Once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, the discus used in track competition is now Correct option. D. The discus used in track competition, once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, but now Modifier error. Once designed modifies track competition E. The discus used in track competition was once designed having its weight concentrated in a metal center and now Changes the meaning. “Having” “and now” makes the construction wrong. Correct option - C
Hi Hemanth, can you please elaborate on comma hugs. I am not sure I got the point. Seems like a nice shortcut!!

Comma hugs are usually useful to check the structure of the sentence. For example: Sehwag, a massive hitter, loves to fight with his wife. In this the sentence should make sense even without the stuff between the commas. Sehwag loves to fight with his wife. This can be used effectively with multiple commas and so on. I will provide more examples as I see them but you can check it out in other sentences. But be careful with these, do not always rely on this blindly. It is true for modifiers and appositives and most cases. Thanks.

Clear C.What is being modified, the discus.Hence C as its the discus with weight weight concentrated in a metal center.Other options, misplaced modifier or else wordy.Even the usage of but now is inappropriate.Well explained Hemanth.

C is correct

I think the key is the phrase "lined with lead around the perimeter", which can only be referred to the discus.

A. In a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition is concentrated in a metal center, but now it is seems to refer to two different discus. it should actually refer to a general "discus used in track competitions" B. According to a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track competition was concentrated in a metal center, but now it is same problem as above C. Once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, the discus used in track competition is now correct as the general discus used in track competitions is being referred to in previous as well as current design D. The discus used in track competition, once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, but now same discus designed previously and now? cannot be true as lots of discus have been used for different competitions E. The discus used in track competition was once designed having its weight concentrated in a metal center and now same issue as D

modifier error is all except C,since discus has to be near lined. The weight isn't lined,as mentioned in other choices.

B and C are grammatically correct. Only C retains the meaning.

The discus used in track competition, once designed with its weight concentrated in a metal center, but now Modifier error. Once designed modifies track competitionE. The discus used in track competition was once designed having its weight concentrated in a metal center and now Changes the meaning. “Having” “and now” makes the construction wrong. Correct option - C
The reson D is incorrect is perfectly explained and justified. Thanks

Re: In a previous design, the weight of the discus used in track [#permalink]

Best answer appears to be "C." Answer A is the wrong tense when referring to a previous design, B is technically gramatically correct but is awkward since the first part of the sentence refers to a design and the second to the discus itself, and D is a gramatical nightmare, never connecting a verb to the original subject. E needs the "it is" to remain intact to sustain grammatic correctness in the second half.
