In a recent study on the connection between brain abnormalities and violent
behavior, the researcher examined more than three hundred people who had
engaged in unusually violent behavior toward friends and family members. In
most of the people studied, the researcher found clues of brain abnormalities,
including evidence of past brain injury and physical abnormality. The researcher
concluded that evidence of brain abnormalities could be used to predict
violent behavior.

Which of the following, if true, would most
seriously weaken the researcher’s
conclusion?

A. The incidence of brain abnormaiities in the generai popuiation is as high as
that in the group examined.

B. The brain abnormaiities discovered in
those studied are of two distinct kinds

C. A wide variety of vioient actions were
exhibited by those studied.

D. Those studied in the experiment acted vioientiy toward strangers as
well as toward peopie they knew.

E. The study drew its subjects from a large geographical area.

What is the OA?

I got B.
Rest all statements are strengthening the researcher’s conclusion.

A says the conclusion should be valid because the researcher’s study is true for general population (conclusion based on wide study's result).

C again describes a wide study especially the violent behavior.

D also shows the violent behavior.

and
E can weaken the researcher’s conclusion because it doesn't specifies that the geographical area consist of large population. But again it shows a wide study (according to me), so it strengthens the conclusion.

And as B contradicts the conclusion, because the researchers' study has not taken the other part of the study into consideration.

A in my opinion.

A - this means that brain abnormality has nothing to do with the violent behaviour.

B - this could mean that brain abnormalities are a reason for the violent behaviour.

C - same as B.

D - violent because they have had brain injuries.

E - this means that the group represents the general population. Hence any conclusion drawn from this study can be easily applied to the general population.
