Here's my analysis to get answer choice D:

A. "her discovery of X and painstakingly documenting Y" not parallel
B. "her discovery of X and painstakingly documenting Y" not parallel
C. parallel, but first part list another comtribution and "was a contibutor" then seems awk.
D. correct
E. "her discovering X and painstaking documentation Y" not parallel

OA is not D, I have seen this before and D and E are not correct.

what does Her refer to in D and E if its "Mary Leakey's"???

Work should be compared with other contribution for correct comparison.

Therefore either it's D or E.
E is wrong, discovering is wrong tense and is not clear about who did the documentation.

The correct answer is "D"

yeah i don't think the OA of D is correct...how can you compare 'her' and 'Leakey's work'...

"her work" is compared with "her contributions"

No where her is compared with her contribution.
