In ancient Celtic Europe, the Beating of the Bounds were (Was needed) a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits ( it modify the township , but township can't itself meant to protect ) , although the reasoning( plural subject needed) behind those thrashes are still vague.
A. Bounds were a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning : Incorrect (discussed in main sentence)
B. Bounds, meant to protect an area from evil spirits (correctly modify the beating of bounds), was performed by a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township although the reasons :correct

E - Correct--- reasons are -Sub verb agreement
B- used passive voice(was performed by) so left-out.......

Something in this case is performed by someone. be suspicious with passive voice. is wrong almost the times but not ALWAYS. Moreover, In E the sentence is too long losing of consistency B is correct

IMO
a>beating of bounds is singular >> were should be WAS.
c>reasoning is behind >>awkward
d>same as A also rationale is singular so ' are still vague' is wrong.
e>means should be meant.
left with B...
pls comment if logic is flawed....

The sentence mainly revolves around the concept of subject verb agreement. Most of the options have one or both of below errors

For reasons discussed above, I narrow it down to B and E. Assuming that "means" in E should be "meant" and is merely a typo, choice E remains in contention.
I think that B changes the meaning of the sentence. The Beating of the Bounds was a tradition that took place in a village, and was meant to protect _the village_ from evil spirits, not any random area. B implies that the Beating of the Bounds can be used more generally to protect areas from spirits.
