A. Bounds were a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning. reasoning singular doesn't match with plural areB. Bounds, meant to protect an area from evil spirits, was performed by a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township although the reasons C. Bounds was a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning is. reasoning is behind those thrashes are awkward usage. D. Bounds, a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township, were meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the rationale. Needed singular verbE. Bounds was a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township means to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasons. Looks correct to me. I am between B & E, but E looks more correct. Can anyone tell what is wrong with B ?

Can you clear the confusion between C vs E by posting the OA ? In E Bounds was a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel doesn't have much sense in this context. Something in this case is performed by someone. be suspicious with passive voice. is wrong almost the times but not ALWAYS. Moreover, In E the sentence is too long losing of consistency B is correct

IMO
a>beating of bounds is singular >> were should be WAS. c>reasoning is behind >>awkward d>same as A also rationale is singular so ' are still vague' is wrong. e>means should be meant.
left with B...

In ancient Celtic Europe, the Beating of the Bounds were a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning behind those thrashes are still vague. The sentence mainly revolves around the concept of subject verb agreement. Most of the options have one or both of below errors 1. The beating of the bounds ...were 2. reasoning is/rationale does not match with plural verb in post underlined partA. Bounds were a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning reasoning...are still vagueB. Bounds, meant to protect an area from evil spirits, was performed by a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township although the reasons correct C. Bounds,a series ....were meant 2. rationale..are still vagueE. Bounds was a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township means to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasons means here seems a typo....this construction is passive though

For reasons discussed above, I narrow it down to B and E. Assuming that "means" in E should be "meant" and is merely a typo, choice E remains in contention.
I think that B changes the meaning of the sentence. The Beating of the Bounds was a tradition that took place in a village, and was meant to protect _the village_ from evil spirits, not any random area. B implies that the Beating of the Bounds can be used more generally to protect areas from spirits.
In ancient Celtic Europe, the Beating of the Bounds were a series of ritualistic thrashes with a hazel or birch branch on the limits of a village or township meant to protect the area from evil spirits although the reasoning behind those thrashes are still vague.
