In August 2010, a report was published on stone projectile [#permalink]

In August 2010, a report was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavating from layers of ancient sediment in Sibudu Cave, South Africa. a) was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavating from layers b) were published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years layers excavated c) published about stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers d) was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers e) on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years was published about layers Could someone explain me, why is answer C wrong. Additionally, could you explain the important differences between answer C and D. I believe the difference is the idiom "published on" or "published about" but not sure. Best regards. FYI I´m amazed with the book GMAT ULTIMATE GRAMMAR, I bought it and it´s great. I´ve read it all and I found only 2 cons. 1 There is no explanation for the answers. 2 some orthographic mistakes (most of them irrelevant to the context).

In August 2010, a report was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavating from layers of ancient sediment in Sibudu Cave, South Africa. a) was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavating from layers --> it changes the meaning severely conveying that stone points are excavating something from the layers--> nuisance meaning b) were published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years layers excavated c) published about stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers --> no verb here sentence incorrect better say fragment. d) was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers --> CORRECT it conserves the meaning e) on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years was published about layers--> changes the meaning D is the best one. HTH

Ans Exp first we should get that subject is singular report so the verb must also be in singular so the actual sentence correctly uses the helping verb but excavating is used for continuous tense as the question is about past so eliminate A on this basis then we are left with b,c,d,e and we can eliminate b because it uses wrong verb were for singular report so we have c,d,e, as c uses' published about' so which makes it wrong, about is used only to describe some thing, so here the report is not describing about stone projectile it's just providing information so eliminate c on this basis, then we are left with d and e we can take d as correct answer because is uses correct verb 'was' and past tense of word excavated so we are left with e Makes total mockery with no correct meaning so eliminate e . Answer Option is d ,hope it's clear.

Hi All, In August 2010, a report was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavating from layers of ancient sediment in Sibudu Cave, South Africa.  In August 2010, a report was published on stone projectile points. These points date back 64,000 years and have been excavated from layers of ancient sediment in Sibudu Cave, South Africa.  The verb-ing modifier “excavating” has been placed right after “64,000 years” without any comma preceding it. This means that this modifier is referring to “64,000 years”. This is absolutely illogical because now the sentence suggests that “64,000 years” did the action of excavating. This is the only error in the sentence. Now let’s run the POE to find the correct answer. POE:Choice A: Incorrect. Modifier error as discussed above. Choice B: were published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years layers excavated: Incorrect. Firstly, this choice has subject verb number agreement error. Singular “a report” cannot have plural verb “were published”. Secondly, change in the placement of “layers” makes the sentence illogical. Choice C: published about stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers: Incorrect. Absence of “was” before “published” turns the sentence into active voice. The sentence now suggests that “a report” did the action of publishing about “stone projectile points”. However, the facts are published in a report. A report does not do the job of publishing. Choice D: was published on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years excavated from layers. Correct. This choice turns “excavating” to “excavated” that refers to “stone projectile points”. This means that these points were excavated in South Africa. Choice E: on stone projectile points dating back 64,000 years was published about layers: Incorrect. “published about layers” suggests that some facts were published about the layers. This choice has an illogical meaning. PS @hero4th: Please read the explanation of Choices C and D to find the difference between the two. Here it is voice issue rather than the idiom.  1. A verb-ing modifier modifies the immediate preceding noun if the modifier is not preceded by a comma. 2. We must use correct voice to convey the logical intended meaning of the sentence. 3.
