Why is it "less than"? I would've said it is "fewer than" because "the number of social protests" is countable.

it is not logic to say that many numbers in crease from 10 to 58. it is logic to say that there is only one number which increase.
b is out
it is not logic to say thay protests increase, it should be the number of protests increase, c, d is out.
