This is how I thought
B & C - Eliminate - Use of will

Left with A, D & E
A & E - Eliminate

Hence D is the answer.

Exactly the same logic that I used.
Clear D for me.

the use of the relative pronoun where is incorrect since the pronoun where can refer only to physical locations.

why is "where" wrong in E?

Not E.
I guess because it changed "can be" to "are". Means different. doesnt it?

A.

B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and exprssession can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing

Usually, on the GMAT, wherever possible, the ING forms are best avoided. Here even though by imitating and practicing are not grammatically wrong (at least in my opinion) yet the ING form makes this choice slightly suspect. Obviously on the exam - we'll just note this in our minds and proceed to examine the rest of the choices.

C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice

By imitation and practice removes the ING problem of B. And the rest of the sentence is pretty similar to B. This seems to be pretty good. Let's see the rest.

D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitation and practice
Here BY WHICH is best avoided. Again it's a matter of diction. The intent of the sentence is that the Chimpanzees WILL exhibit the kind of curiosity SO THAT new patterns of behavior etc ...can be passed on etc..

This is similar to the adage - Boys WILL be boys; OR They WILL do this in order to save themselves. So, this sentence in SEMANTICS is of the form where some one DOES something SO THAT something else happens.

E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

WHERE is uncalled for. Where is an adverb which requires a verb to modify. But Kind of curiosity is noun and where can't modify it.
please provide your explanations :)

Fantastic question - I saw the answer discussed elsewhere on the club. I didn't get it right, but I made it a point to understand why the correct answer is correct.

i'm going with C.

If Jane collected data and studied chimps for 26 years that "proved" something, that tells me that chimps "will" do something b/c it has already been proven.

I also compared "from one to another"--I didn't think "each one to others".

Is there an OA to calm the curious crowd???
