A. exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing
B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing
C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice
D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitation and practice
E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

This is how I thought
B & C - Eliminate - Use of will

Left with A, D & E
A & E - Eliminate

Hence D is the answer.

A.

B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and exprssession can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing

Usually, on the GMAT, wherever possible, the ING forms are best avoided. Here even though by imitating and practicing are not grammatically wrong (at least in my opinion) yet the ING form makes this choice slightly suspect. Obviously on the exam - we'll just note this in our minds and proceed to examine the rest of the choices.

C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice

By imitation and practice removes the ING problem of B. And the rest of the sentence is pretty similar to B. This seems to be pretty good. Let's see the rest.

D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitation and practice
Here BY WHICH is best avoided. Again it's a matter of diction. The intent of the sentence is that the Chimpanzees WILL exhibit the kind of curiosity SO THAT new patterns of behavior etc ...can be passed on etc..

This is similar to the adage - Boys WILL be boys; OR They WILL do this in order to save themselves. So, this sentence in SEMANTICS is of the form where some one DOES something SO THAT something else happens.

E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

WHERE is uncalled for. Where is an adverb which requires a verb to modify. But Kind of curiosity is noun and where can't modify it.
please provide your explanations :)

Fantastic question - I saw the answer discussed elsewhere on the club. I didn't get it right, but I made it a point to understand why the correct answer is correct.

I'll vote for D

A. Exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing - out for using "so that" and "each one to others"
B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing. - out for using "will"
C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice.- out for using "will"
D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice. - Correct
E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice. - out for using "where new ...."

option 4 is correct.

exhibit is needed.....will exhibit is incorrect.....that leaves 1, 4 and 5

1 is awkward (out)

5 says.....exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns.....'where' is used for places and hence is wrong in this context...also usage of 'are' is incorrect....'are' means that it always happens whereas the sentence demands probability because the Jane Goodal collected data which proved something.

4 is correct.

In her 26 years in the forests of Gombe, Jane Goodall collected data that proved that chimpanzees exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing

1) exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing
2) will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing
3) will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practicing
4) exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice
5) exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

1) exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing -- usage of so that is used to provide a reason ; each one to others is incorrect
2) will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing -- usage of future tense is incorrect as the statement is a fact ; usage of so that is used to provide a reason
3) will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practicing - same as B ; usage of so that is used to provide a reason
4) exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice - Correct
5) exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice -- usage of where

'so that' implies that chimpanzees are actually thinking, 'Hmm... if i exhibit curiosity, then i'll be able to catch on to my fellow chimps' behavior patterns. Hey, that sounds like a great idea! I think I'll do that!"

In her 26 years in the forests of Gombe, Jane Goodall collected data that proved that chimpanzees exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing.

note: A lady collected data over a period of time, proving that certain behaviours exist in chimps. The correct sentence must relate to the trends observed - in past or general facts.

"will exhibit" is incorrect as it shows the event will take place in future when it has already actually taken place - we are describing current trends
B. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitating and practicing
C. will exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practicing

The chimps don't purposely exhibit curiosity to get from point A to point B... it is their curiosity that causes them to incidentally change
A. exhibit the kind of curiosity so that new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from each one to others by imitating and practicing

D is correct - curiosity is the catalyst for new patterns.. etc.
D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice

Where is wrong - curiosity is not a place
E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

MANY things to learn from this problem
frist thing
if the main clause is in the past, the subordinate clause normally is in the past, but it may be in any tense depending on the logic. one case which happen most frequently is that the subordinate clause is in simple present. I do not know any different tense other than simple past in the subordinated clause which can go the main clause in the past.
that proved that chimpanzees exibits". PROVED and EXHIBIT are main verb and verb in the subordinate clause . simple present shows a timeless fact, which can go with simple past in the main clause in the past tense.
"will exhibit" in B and C is wrong. logic dose not permit this case. "would exhibit" can go with "proved".

second thing
the passive sentence "A is done by B " is popular and it is popular that " B is persons". but inhere, agent B is not person but an action noun. look at choice D
"by imitation and practice" means "imitation and practice " make "news patterns of behavior".
we should be ready for this case to accept the right choice quickly.

Hi thangvietnam ,
Let us put option D in the original sentence and break it down.
In her 26 years in the forests of Gombe,
Jane Goodall collected data
that(data) proved that

Ques: Which the kind of curiosity do chimpanzees exhibit?
Answer: the kind by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another.
Ques: How can they be transferred from one to another?
Answer: by imitation and practice.

Hope this makes a bit more sense.

What is the function of 'where' in E? Can this word only modify the place or can it modify the verb as well?

Hello, GMATPolvon. If you look at sentences (D) and (E) together, you can spot that by which and where are used in the same capacity:

Quote:
D. exhibit the kind of curiosity by which new patterns of behavior and expression can be passed on from one to another by imitation and practice

E. exhibit the kind of curiosity where new patterns of behavior and expression are passed on to others by imitation and practice

This usage of where is less formal in English and serves as an easy-on-the-tongue substitution for a preposition + relative pronoun (which) construct. It is more common to see or hear where in place of in which or, especially, at which. (Nobody says, The store at which I shop for __________. Such a stilted expression would probably garner a nasty side-eye, as though the speaker were wearing a powdered wig.)

I hope that helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask. Good luck with your studies.

the choice D is

so, pls, explain the use of 2 "by" . thank you

I eat the lunch

the first "by" shows the agent, the second "by" show method.
is this right ?
