In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus
was growing on the walls.

(A) due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing
(B) due to moisture that tourists had exhaled, thereby raising its humidity to such levels that salt from the stone would crystallize
(C) because tourists were exhaling moisture, which had raised the humidity within them to levels such that salt from the stone would crystallize
(D) because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high as to make the salt from the stone crystallize
(E) because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing

OE of D says them seems to wrongly refer to tourists and E says them clearly refers to chambers
But I failed to understand how them in D refers to tourists and how them in E refers to chambers. Two sentences seem similar to me.

Please help.

not very specific to your concern -

But,

stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing... makes the sentence parallel.

considering this i have just choices A and E left, of these 'because' is better than 'due to' and also i think 'its' in A refers to pyramid which is not right... chambers inside the pyramid are closed, so 'their' should be used.

i also think that in D - there should be comma before 'raising.'

so i choose E.

In D, "raising" is a gerund phrase which modifies the noun it is placed next to, so in this case "them" seems to modify the tourists; however, in case of E, first off, "them" is quite far from tourists; second, "tourists" is a subject, not object, so "them" can not modify the "tourists".

I also think sentence D will be much better if comma is placed before "Resulting.."
