So why not C?

A. In many upper-class Egyptian homes, French was spoken within the family, just as it had once been among the Russian aristocracy.

C. In many upper-class Egyptian homes, French was spoken within the family, just as Russian aristocracy had once done.

if you compare between A and C, you clearly see that in C it is not clear that "what Russian aristocracy had once done" but thats not the problem in A.

A clearly, concisely and correctly says that French had once been spoken among the Russian aristocracy.

I think C is correct.
'As' will be used for comparing clause. So, choices B,D and E are out.
French was spoken.....will take "once done"
A would have been the best choice had 'done' been there between 'been' and 'among'
What's the OA?

Artemov - I am absolutely lost reading your explanation. What is it you are trying to convey?

completely agree to your explanation, should be C

btw: is it agree to or agree with your explanation?? "with" should be for persons, ideas and "to" for plans or actions... is explanation an action?
