(A) just as it had once been among the Russian aristocracy - Use of As is right but its wordy and awkward compared to C. Wrong
(B) just like it once had been among the Russian aristocracy - Like / As combination. Like cannot be used because it is not followed by noun .
(C) just as the Russian aristocracy had once done - Correct
(D) similar to what the Russian aristocracy had done once - Wrong
(E) like what had once been done by the Russian aristocracy - Use of Like is wrong.
Open to debate.

A. B is wrong bc it sounds beyond awkward. C is wrong because, again, it's awkward and doesn't make reference to "it" i.e. Frence D is wrong because "similar" doesn't flow well E is wrong because "like what had once been done" is awkward

Please provide the answers with explanations Answer is A. When so many different options confuse you, you must try to look for some other basic error. Use of just as, just like, similar, like are very confusing. Try to find some other basic error. The underlined portion must be parallel to "French was spoken within the family". I hope you notice that this is in passive voice. So try keeping the underlined portion parallel in passive voice. This eliminates C & D. Then try pinning down 'once'. Try to answer the question that "where should once be placed?" Between had & been or before had? I'd prefer saying "I had once been a professor" rather than say "I once had been a professor". This narrows down to A & E. Between A & E, E never stood a chance. The questions are never difficult, but the key is time & speed.

Please provide the answers with explanations At first sight to A, I thought it's weird since it has "it". I couldn't point out what "it" does indicate. SO I looked at C whose structure is similar to A's, but found it's wrong. On second thought...I figured out "it" indicates the "French". So...bingo. A is the answer.
