In Patton City, days are categorized as having heavy rainfall (more than two inches), moderate rainfall (more than one inch, but no more than two inches), light rainfall (at least a trace, but no more than one inch), or no rainfall. In 1990, there were fewer days with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall, yet total rainfall for the year was 20 percent higher in 1990 than in 1910.

If the statements above are true, then it is also possible that in Patton City

A. the number of days with heavy rainfall was lower in 1990 than in 1910
B. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was the same in 1990 as in 1910
C. the number of days with some rainfall, but no more than two inches, was higher in 1990 than in 1910
D. the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990 was more than twice what it had been in 1910

BCE are clearly not possbile...

A and D both are possibly. if i am not missing anything, why A is not possible??????????

This question seems more like a math problem.
I think only A can be answer. I did a little caculation and found out that D cannot happen once the original condition is applied.

D cannot be ruled out completely because -
If let's say 1910 had 10 days of moderate rain (of say 1.1*10 = 11 inches) and
let's say 1990 had 9 days of moderate rain (of say 1.9*9 = 17.1 inches)
then definitely 1990 had more overall rain even though the number of moderate rainy days are less in 1990.

To support the argument, the answer should be " the number of days with heavy rainfall was higher in 1990 than in 1910"

D.the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990 was more than twice what it had been in 1910

Since moderate rainfall defines as "more than one inch, but no more than two inches", I wonder it is possible that "the total number of inches of rain that fell on days with moderate rainfall in 1990 was more than twice what it had been in 1910" on condition that "In 1990, there were fewer days with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall"

The only way the rainfall in 1990 can be higher than 1910 will be if it ahs more number of heavy rain days. A clearly contradicts this. I vote for D. OA please

How can it be A?
If the number of days with heavy , moerate and low rainfall was lower in 1990 than in 1910 , then how can average og 1990 be greater than 1910?

Some rainfall should be higher in 1990 for the statement to hold.

I think it is D.But can someone tell me why not C?

This contradicts the information given in the statement. "In 1990, there were fewer days with light rainfall than in 1910 and fewer with moderate rainfall" _________________
