In response to viral infection, the immune systems of mice typically produce antibodies that destroy the virus by binding to proteings on its surface. Mice infected with a herpesvirus generally develop keratitis, a degenerative disease affecting part of the eye. Since proteins on the surface of cells in this part of the eye closely resemble those on the herpervirus surface, scientists hypothesize that these cases of keratitis are caused by antibodies to herpesvirus.

not clear about the last line " caused by antibodies to herpes virus"

I think answer is E

Scientists hypothosize that anti-bodies cause this disease in which they attach to the the protein on the surface of this virus

Also, the protein is similar to that on the eye ... so the antibodies if produced can attach itself to the protein on the eye and cause the disease too.
Option E states this

Clearly D

E is out because there are may be other factors that cause the deasease, not necessarily antibodies. So it doesn't prove or refute anything.

option D states that there are no antibodies but the mice survive the infection ???

this makes the antibodies redundant ... mice cannot survive the infection without antibodies

See my additions to the previous post.

As to your arguments, there are plenty of deseases that humans survive for years without developing antibodies. With reduced immunity, one doesn't develop enough antibodies even to the most common deseases. However, taking antibiotics, one can survive for years.

Now to the question, we are told nothing about how those mice actually survived the desease. May be they were given antibiotics or other drugs to suppress the desease.

Will go with D.

The hypothesis is that the keratitis are formed by the antibodies for the herpes virus.
To support this hypothesis we have to show that mice that dont produce the antibodies done contract heratitis.
THis is stated in D

I have chosen D for this question:

This is a causal relationship: antibodies causes keratitis

To strengthen this argument, we can say that no antibodies results in no keratitis

A. We are not concerned about other types of viruses

B. We are not concerned about how quickly the mice contract herpes

C. This would potentially weaken the argument because the level of antibodies is the same, yet these mice do not develop keratitis.

D. This is the correct answer. A situation where mice do need develop antibodies leads to no development of keratitis.

E. This weakens the argument because it seems like herpesvirus is not the only source of developing keratitis.
