In September, John sold \(\frac{2}{3}\) more soap than in February. In November, he sold 5 percent more than in September. John's November sales were what percent greater than his February sales?

(A) \(\frac{10}{3}\)%

(B) 65%

(C) \(\frac{214}{3}\)%

(D) 75%

(E) \(\frac{514}{3}\)%

Are You Up For the Challenge: 700 Level Questions

Solution:

    • September’s sale is \(\frac{2}{3}\) more than sales of February, it makes sense to assume February’s sale to be multiple of \(3\) so that our calculation becomes easier.
      • Let the sales of February be \(300\) units.
        o Sale of September = \(300 + \frac{2}{3}*300 = 500\)
      • Sales of November = \(500 + \frac{5}{100}*500 = 525\)
      • Required percent = \(\frac{(525 – 300)}{300}*100 = \frac{225}{3} =75\%\)
Hence, the correct answer is Option D.

      • Required percent = \(\frac{(525 – 300)}{300}*100 = \frac{225}{3} =75%\)
Hence, the correct answer is Option D.

We can also solve it in a different way. let's see how
    • There are two increases after February, one in September and the second is in November.
o The first increase is of \(\frac{2}{3}\) part or we can say \(67\%\) approx.
o The second increase is \(5\%\).
    • We can use the concept of successive percentage change to find an overall percentage change.
      o \(67 + 5 + \frac{67*5}{100} = 72 + 3\) (Approx.) = \(75\%\)
Hence, the correct answer is Option D.
