"the rate of increase ..." is the Subject--say X Now X-->Comparing with whom? IN A--it is with "1970's" only B compares it correctly E OUT--cant be greater(fast/faster--> the right words) C is OUT too priyankur_saha@ml.com wrote: In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s. It is a well-discussed question.
"rate" can be niether fast nor slow - it is just a number. C.

I think its B for parallelism: "In the 1980's" & "twice as fast as it was in the 1970's"

the usage of "rate of increase" with fast is redundant. Hence C is the best choice priyankur_saha@ml.com wrote: In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s. (C) should be the correct answer because "faster rate" makes no sense, it's no car or no horse, just some number, percentage.
All answer choices except (C) and (E) use adjective "faster". In (E) "rate of increase" is compared with "the 1970's" and also makes no sense
Hence (C)

I think B & C both are correct but since C got superior because it is more Concise than B.

But don't you people think that 'it' can refer to both 'increase' as well as 'population'?

Here in this sentence the comparison element is "the rate of increase" not 'rate" and i think "the rate of increase" can be fast n slow [:)] Think the only reason C is correct is C is precise(mentioned by amod243)

My Ans is 'C' 'B' and 'C' come close to be correct. However in 'B', 'fast rate of increase' is incorrect. Use of 'fast' here is redundant.

I would vote for B.
In C what & it are redundant since both are replacing the rate of increase.

I chose C after quickly eliminating A and B. C is grammatically correct and concise. Posted from my mobile device
