The stem was alright...but the options were as confusing as they could be...not confident abt the answer...but would go for A.
Tulip
|
|------ Sycamore(can be anywhere above Maples)
|
Maples
|
|
|
Dogwoods
As A is the only option which helps us in establishing a relationship...wud like to go for A.
Hope Im right.
Vivek.

Sorry Vivek,
A is not the answer. I think A can easily be eliminated because we know that ALL tulip > ANY maple > ANY dogwoods
So A can not ne true. We need to find a choice that must be true.

I will go with E.
Some sycamores are not as old as the youngest tulip trees because majority of sycamores are older than mapple trees and all tulip trees are older than mapple trees.

Yep, E.
Some sycamores can be as old or older than tulips, maples and dogwoods. Some can also be younger than dogwoods. So E is the safest statement out of all the choices.

The answer is E.
Given:
ALL tulip > ANY maple > ANY dogwoods
MOST sycamores > ANY maple > ANY dogwoods
Given this information, wouldn't C also be always true?

C cannot be true because it is possible that some sycamores are as old as the oldest dogwoods. This possibility makes the statement wrong.

Agreed that " some sycamores are as old as the oldest dogwoods" is a possibility. But it is just possibility. However, irrespective of whether this is really true or not, I think the choice C, Some sycamores are not as old as the oldest dogwoods. will always be correct. Consider the following expression again.
MOST sycamores > ANY maple > ANY dogwoods
Based on the above expression, if I say that "SOME sycamores are not as old as the oldest dogwoods", what is wrong with that? Afterall, SOME is just the subset of MOST.
Is it just that this choice comes staright forward from the given information in the stem and is therefore not the right answer? That could be possible.
I am nont disputing about the correct answer. The correct answer should be E. I am just trying to understand a point here.

Yes, but the question is asking what answer must be true. Choice C musn't be true.

Answer: E
If most sycamores are older than all maples, some sycamores are younger than all maples. If all tulips are older than all maples, then some sycamores have to be younger than all tulips.
