Given that the amounts allocated to household expenses (E), food (F), and miscellaneous items (M) are in the ratio 5x:2x:1x and the total amount allocated to these three categories is $1,800, thus 5x+2x+x=1,800 --> x=225 --> F=2x=$450.

Answer: D.
