A is the correct answer. The trick lies in "was" in choice A versus "had been" in choice E

missed it. went for B. To me, 'where' is causing little trouble in A..can anyone explain.

where in A refers to homes (a location) - at these homes lighting was provided by gas and candles. saravalli wrote: missed it. went for B. To me, 'where' is causing little trouble in A..can anyone explain.

My take A .B makes sentence awkward by putting electricity as the subject for clause after and . C and E has misplaced modifiers ,where modifying electricity.C is awkward

Im with A, although "electricity was in less than one percent of homes" sounds very bad for me.

This SC is about the correct contrast. Contrast is between electric lightning Vs electricity X had installed electric lighting, but electricity was in Y

+1 for A as well. The last clause modified "homes" correctly.

Which is correct - there were less than one percent of homes with electricity or there was... I feel there were? Clearly one percent of homes is more than 1 home...

I strongly feel its E, but is a co-ordinating conjunction, so A has a wrong comparison, major cities to electricity. Any Inputs???

In E, where incorrectly modifies electricity--> electricity, where... However, where is an adverb, so I cannot understand how it can modify a noun. Please, clarify this point. Thanks.
