(C), (D), (E) changes the meaning of the sentence

(B) changes the meaning of the sentence as well as the sentence suggest the antipodes were the end of the world before there Australia even existed (the island continent must have sprung up suddenly later on)

(A) it is.

would pick A
B says 'before there was australia' which is incorrect...as australia always existed, it just hadn't been named
C, D and E suggest that 'Australia' was on the minds of ppl in england...whereas it seems the sentence is trying to say that before australia was named as that, ppl knew it as the 'Antipodes'
