In the number line, are x and y on different sides of zero point?
1). The distance from x to zero is equal to the distance from y to 1
2). The sum of the distance from x to zero and the distance from y to 1 is less than 1

1. Not sufficient as x=-1 and y=2 or x=1 and y=2 would be valid

2. Same reasoning (with different values of x and y) makes it not sufficient.

With both statements together, there is still no clear answer as x=-0.1 or +0.1 and y= 1.1 for both would meet (1) and (2)
