In the suburbs surrounding Middletown, there is an
average of 2.4 automobiles per family, and thus very
few suburban residents use public buses. The subur-
ban communities, therefore, would derive little bene-
fit from continuing to subsidize the portion of
Middletown's public bus system that serves the
suburbs.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most
serious doubt on the conclusion drawn above?
(A) The real-estate tax rate in Middletown is higher
than it is in the suburbs.
(B) Last year voters in the suburban communities
defeated by a narrow margin a bill designed
to increase subsidies for public bus routes.
(C) Many suburban shops can attract enough
employees to remain in business only because
subsidized public transportation from
Middletown is available.
(D) Public buses operated with less than a 35
percent occupancy rate produce more pollu-

My choice B.

My reasoning:

The argument says that 'The subur-
ban communities, therefore, would derive little bene-
fit from continuing to subsidize
the portion of
Middletown's public bus system that serves the
suburbs.'
In order words, it means that the subsidies do not help the people.

And B states that last year voters in the suburban communities
defeated by a narrow margin a bill designed
to increase subsidies for public bus routes.

So if subsidies do not help them, then why should they defeat the bill to increase the subsidies? This means that there is something in the subsidies that benefits them.

Hence I chose B.

I feel that my answer could be wrong. But still I preferred to express my line of reasoning. Would be glad if someone could correct me.

C it is.
B uses the word narrow margin meaning fifty% of voters still want subsidies,

I think B means that >50%, say 51% defeated a bill to increase subsidies. Meaning they dont want the increase. They are unhappy as it is, than they definitely dont want the increase. Hope that makes sense. Besides, C casts a real doubt to the conclusion.

Thanks. I overlooked the phrase 'narrow margin', and that makes the choice weak.

Conclusion is: The suburban communities, therefore, would derive little benefit from continuing to subsidize ..........

So the answer that asserts that communiteis are benefited from the subsidy will weaken the conclusion, which C!
