AB: trying to is awkward. use attempt

CD: attempt to +try = (attempt to)^2. redundant.

E it is.

'trying to metabolize' is awkward. We need 'attempt to..' -> A,B out
C -> 'such a chemical irritant' appears to suggest a certain chemical. Out.
D -> 'it' points to dioxin. Out.

E is the best -parallel and no pronoun referent problem.
