Indian female GMAT 720 profile evaluation [#permalink] New post 09 Jun 2013, 18:31
Hello, few days back I gave GMAT for the second time and scored 720(47 q, 42 v ) the first time I gave GMAT I had scored 650 (47 q, 34 v) . I have 3 years work experience in a local IT company and hold a ME degree from Cornell with 3.0 / 4.3. I was a team member of a NSF project in cornell. As I had some family issues, I was not able to score extraordinary marks during my ME and had to return to india as soon as I finished my education. I had completed my b.tech from India from a good college and had scored 73.9% . My co curricular activities involve volunteering for blood donation camps in my college and donating blood regularly. Also I am associated with green peace India and have won several group discussion competitions . I have also participated in technical presentations at national level and now a days am learning jazz dance. With this background what are my chance of securing admission in top 25 colleges and do I need to give GMAT again because of low quant score

You have a good profile. Your high GMAT score will make up for your low B.Tech grades. As long as your story is consistent, and you have shown ability to do hard work in the past, a slight aberration in your grades won't affect your application much.

As far as extracurriculars are concerned, they show that you're outgoing and initiative taking person. But, you would have to highlight your achievements as compared to mere participation in events. If you are passionate about any cause (blood donation, women, education, etc), take up a leadership role, and lead from the front. It is easy to become a volunteer.

If you can translate all your achievements into good essays, I think you can easily get to the interview stage. If I were you, I would focus all my energies on the application essays. If I were you, I wouldn't take up GMAT again. Focus on essays.

Visit schools. Speak to current students and alumni of your target schools. Use LinkedIn if you cannot find contacts at those schools. Get your application reviewed, and re-reviewed by the alumni. It helps.

Good luck!

You will need to address the low grades during the ME program more than your quaint score. Please see http://www.accepted.com/mba/application ... s.aspx#Low Congrats on the increased GMAT!

You have compete stats for the lower half of the top 25.

Best,
Linda
