Indian School of Business
ISB is a very young school - it was founded to address the shortage of managers with proper management education in South Asia (India to be more specific). The concept of a management school was thought up a bunch of Indian businessmen lead by Rajat Gupta (currently serving as a special advisor on management reforms to the Secretary-General of the UN) in 1996. The focus of the school was to be on aspirants keen on working in India or Indian firms abroad. The first batch of students joined ISB in 2001 and passed out one year later. An executive MBA was soon launched thereafter. Hence it is not a very mature school - not even ten years old!

Institution and Course Structure:
The course itself is one year long and is known for its rigor. Each year is divided into eight terms - each term lasting 5-6 weeks in length. The first four terms are the core terms and have no electives. The second four terms are the elective courses - there are over 70 electives to choose from. As per the information session I attended last year, the number of contact hours at ISB with the teachers/professors was over 700 hours in the full course and can go to 900 hrs depending on the electives chosen.

ISB works on the concept of visiting faculty. The number of permanent faculty is just 30. However, faculty from three schools: Wharton, LBS and Kellogg visit the school for one term and take up courses for the full term (i.e. 5-6 weeks). At anytime there are up to 100 faculty members teaching at ISB. This gives the school the advantage of a world class faculty.

Outside ISB:
ISB is located on the outskirts of the capital city of Andhra Pradesh: Hyderabad. It is one of the largest cities of India (comes in the top six). It is the meeting point of the Hindu and Muslim cultures and thus has a cosmopolitan feel to it. Known for its spicy cuisine (biryani anyone?) and is now a rapidly developing city with many software firms like Microsoft, Insosys, Wipro, TCS etc. located there. The campus is located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. It enjoys the locational advantage of being close to the campuses of Microsoft, Infosys and Wipro.

ISB is a real good bet for anyone considering a good school with reasonable oppurtunity cost and its added advantage of being 1 yr program.

It also has got good placement record.

i have many of my Engg class mates graduted and currently doing their MBA in ISB.
Its one of my preferred school for application

Yes, i think ISB is my best bet. It works well even on the cost perspective.

There are couple of my class mates(Engineering) graduated from ISB and all their feedback are excellent.

Hi chiank123

you are comparing apple and orange....
IIMA ISB
Target Audience Fresh Graduates Experienced professionals
Peer learning insignificant Most important
Exposure good Excellent
Placements Best Better than the Best
International reputation Good Excellent
Cost Excellent reasonable

I have classmates ( Engineering) graduated from both ISB and IIMs(A,B), they are placed at different levels and their reason to pursue an MBA and take out of MBA are totally different

I would have loved to help you. Frankly speaking I'm also gonna apply in round 1 (cross-fingered). Though I don't have much ideas right now, and I also have similar question which you are asking. But surely, once done I will share my exp.

Anyway, just listing the essay lists. As I progress I will try to add ideas for each essay. Maybe in case there are others interested in putting up their thoughts.

Essay 1: Give 3 reasons as to why you should be selected to the class of 2011. These reasons should ideally differentiate you from the applicant pool and should be backed with some data. (300 words max)

Essay 2: Describe a challenging assignment you have handled (at work or outside) to date. What were the challenges and how did you handle them. What were the personal learnings you derived from this assignment. (300 words max)

Essay 3: Briefly assess your career progression till date along with your assessment of your future career goals. Discuss how your career goals will be met by the ISB’s one year program. (300 words max)

Essay 4: (Optional) Please provide additional information, if any, that will significantly affect the consideration of your application to the ISB. Please do not repeat information which has already been stated elsewhere in the application. You may use this to clarify any breaks in education/work, inform about any other item which you think has not been covered elsewhere etc. (300 words max)

Hello bigoyal , yes, Im a typical MIT (Male Indian IT) with about 3 n a half years of work ex, a couple of years of onsite exp, now confused totally about what next.. after a lot of soul searching, contemplation, self actualization and what not, i came to a conclusion that an MBA and a MC career is what I want. Planning to apply for the second round llike most of the others ;o). still not attempted GMAT, like a few others ;o). Attempted a GMAT mock test last week and scored about 630. Now working on ways to get a 720+..

:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

I'm yet struggling with my essays, and am not even ready with the 1st draft :( .Though I don't wanna miss R1, but with the speed I'm progressing, it seems I'll end up applyin in R2 :P

Apart from isb, I've applied in IIMA. I missed applying in IIMC. Haven't yet given a thought for international b-schools.

What bout you? where all are you applying ?
