Industry/Sub-Industry - Have you thought about it? [#permalink] New post 26 Mar 2007, 13:16
I've been thinking that most of us want to get into industries like consulting, IB or capital markets etc. How many of you know which sub-industry you'd ideally like to work with or in.

So the choices are (straight from Vault):

Consulting
Consumer Products & Retail
Construction
Education
Energy/Oil & Gas
Engineering
Fashion
Finance
Government & Non-Profit
Health/Pharma
HR
Law
Manufacturing
Marketing
Media/Entertainment
Real Estate
Sales
Tech
Travel & Leisure

Where do you guys fit? Please mention sub-industries, eg Consulting could be in Health care, Engineering, Oil & Gas etc).

If there are any others that are left out, please point it out.

I have always looked at Heavy Construction as the industry I'd like to be in post-MBA, with Oil & Gas as a strong 2nd choice.

In terms of function, I would like to get into project finance and general management.

Are you talking heavy construction like Halliburton/KBR/Fluor or CB&I or as in Tall High Rises and Large complexes?

What sort of schools are you targeting?

My first preference is in true heavy construction - bridges, roads, runways, underground utilities, etc...However, I would also consider large-scale residential construction and the oil/gas industry.

Halliburton/KBR and Bechtel are both on my short list of companies I would like to work for post-MBA. Exxon and Fluor are also on that list.

I'll be attending Chicago GSB this Fall, where I'll concentrate on Finance and General Management and look to land a finance management internship and subsequent position at one of the companies on my list.

I'm interested in the healthcare sector. Within this sector I'm attracted towards biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. I have experience in specialty chemicals at the R&D, product development and manufacturing level and so working either as a product manager, or in consulting or IB roles/functions would be fun.

I am looking at consulting or general management in green energies, specifically nuclear. (sorry to any environmentalists who don't view that as a green energy)

I know I want to work in the Restaurant/Hospitality industry, ideally consulting/business strategy. I would be happy working at a home office of a major brand working with business growth and operational issues for quite sometime. :-D
