insead or ibd offer [#permalink] New post 26 Jun 2013, 06:04
So I recently got an offer at Insead and an investment banking analyst offer from a premier bank at HK, and I wanted to hear your perspectives.

Background: one of hyp, under
Working Experience: 1 yr. (yes 1 yr.) But has been working for ibds for all summers, except for my freshman summer when I worked on my fist venture. Built a team, raised capital and took semesters off to work on my venture after my freshman summer.
Gmat: 0.1%. 770.
Insead offer vs a top bracket ib analyst offer

So I worked as an ibd analyst at a European bank for 1 yr in hk, and unfortunately the company made structural adjustments so I left. I continued with my earlier venture, while applying for business school. Insead is the only school I applied to. Took me 5 months from leaving old company to receiving the offer. At the same, I got another analyst offer from another decent bank in hk. I am likely to sell my enterprise at the moment, so it isn’t an option.

Now is my choice. Idb analyst or insead.

I understanding continuing ibd and going for insead meant two different paths of lives – and two different possibilities with my life.

If I go with ibd offer, I will spend 2 more years in banking, then I will re-apply, likely get into hws, then return to buy side or top ib. It is a relatively boring, straight forward, but financially secure path that is well followed in finance industry. I can see myself in 5-10 years doing finance in Asia.
Disadvantage: I don’t know if I love finance at much.

If I go with Insead, I would have wider options after graduation, and a more exciting life in next year. I could apply for consulting, assets management positions in Europe or Middle East, instead of just in Asia. I may get to go with a life that I would otherwise never have imagined.
Disadvantage: tremendous uncertainty. Is it easy for an analyst with only 1 yr of pre-mba banking experience to secure any second year associate consultant position at a mbb? Is it easy to land a decent associate offer at another bank? I just don’t see that on employment report, and I don’t see myself competing favourably with more senior classmates with longer experience.

It is also financially difficult to accept. The earlier saving I had is almost depleted. I don’t want my family to bleed to death by a mba program.
I want to ask – not just insead alumnis, but anyone willing to share experience a post-mba experience to see how I should make my decisions.

Any insights appreciated.

Good problem to have.

I see the biggest disadvantage with going to Insead at your age/experience level is that you'll be competing for jobs with people who have a lot more experience than you. By taking the IBD position, you'd at least get another couple of years of experience, money, and you can still career switch after business school. Just because you start in banking doesn't mean you have to stay there forever.
