Re: Installing a thermostat in a greenhouse helps achieve [#permalink]
Reasoning error : Thermostats can only control strict thermal conditions.
Choice : Strawberry provides the necessary Vitamin C intake which protects scurvy. Only reqd intake of strawberry can protect scurvy.

Re: Installing a thermostat in a greenhouse helps achieve [#permalink]
Installing a thermostat in a greenhouse helps achieve optimal thermal conditions for cultivating chrysanthemums. Since chrysanthemums cannot be cultivated without strictly controlled thermal conditions, Jack’s greenhouse, which does not have a thermostat, cannot be used to cultivate chrysanthemums.

Which of the following arguments contains a reasoning error that is also contained in the argument above?
(A)Unless wood used to construct boats is treated with special chemicals, boats will eventually start leaking. Since leakage, if not noticed in time, may cause a boat to sink, Jack’s wooden boat, which was built without using special leakage-preventing chemicals, will sink.
Incorrect: word "unless" makes it clear that there is no other way to prevent leak. So flaw is absent.

(B)Acids can be counteracted by using soda ash, baking soda, or other alkaline substances. Unless acid spills are treated with alkaline substances such as soda, poisonous vapor and soil contamination can cause tremendous damage to surrounding areas and people. Therefore, in order to prevent soil contamination by the sulfuric acid Jack spilled in his backyard, he should treat it with an alkaline substance such as baking soda or soda ash.
Incorrect: word "unless" makes it clear that there is no other way to prevent tremendous damage. So flaw is absent.

(C)If a touch screen is protected with a special protector, it will not have scratches and fingerprints on it. If screen protectors are not used, scratches and fingerprints on the touch screen will become visible within a month of intensive use. Since Jack uses a screen protector on his touch screen cell phone, his phone screen will not have scratches and fingerprints on it.
Incorrect. Here the reasoning is negative of that of question stem. So not applicable.

(D)Eating one cup of strawberries per day provides the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C. If you do not consume the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C, you will eventually develop scurvy. Therefore, people who do not eat a cup of strawberries daily will develop scurvy.
Correct. Flaw in this reasoning follows that in main stem. ("only" cause)

(E)Unless you provide constant airflow and sufficient humidity in your greenhouse, you will not be able to cultivate mushrooms there. Since Jack’s greenhouse meets neither of these conditions, he will not be able to cultivate mushrooms in it.
Incorrect: word "unless" makes it clear that there is no other way to cultivate mushrooms. So flaw is absent.
