2/3 split .....i go with "also" as "and also" seems wordy !!

(C) also shortens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel to a minimum of seven days rather than that of => "that of" not ||

(D) also lessens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel to a seven-day minimum from

(E) also shortens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel to a minimum of seven days rather than => "rather than" is the correct idiom

My Answer : E

What got me on this question was the use of 'shortens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel.'

Can we 'shorten' the 'requirement?'

Shouldn't we 'lessen' the 'requirement?'

hmmm.... makes sense... you normally say... "less number of days".. you never say "short number of days"... so i guess.. yes.. "lessen" is the rite choice...

The OA is E. But I like to stir things up. :-D

D) also lessens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel to a seven-day minimum from

(E) also shortens the advance-purchase requirement for family travel to a minimum of seven days rather than

Chopping off the wordy pieces and ignoring the underlined part of the sentence, the sentence becomes:

D) lessens requirement to X
E) shortens requirement to X

'Lessens and shortens', in this case, apply to requirement and not to X, which is the period of time.

A & B - Can be eliminated - use of "and also" is wrong.

Left with C,D & E

C - Eliminate - "rather than that of" - too long.

Left with D & E comparing them
D- eliminate "minimum from" is not really a great construction.

Hence going with E.
