Clear Admit Blog

Quote:
RM: One thing many applicants miss in the essay section is that success
in this section is dictated more by strategy than creativity
. When
applying to a top business school it is very hard to find something that
can truly differentiate you amidst an elite group of applicants. So
spending time thinking about that one creative truly unforgettable
detail or topic that is going to move that committee is not realistic.

Instead, think about who you are and why your life experiences to date
are a good fit for that particular institution.

I keep reading how you need to make your essays jump out at the reader and be memorable by doing x, y, z.

It seems to me that schools are getting tired of it. Apparently Duke's adcom also mentioned the same thing "we prefer straightforward essays".

Make your essays memorable by what you talk about, not how you talk about it.

See my comments about the PPT in the other thread - they hit on this exact issue.

Yes I have to agree with rhyme and the ad-com. I can truly say that my ppt last year was incredibly creative and well made (and took forever to put together). Yet the content could have been more personal. I was dinged after the interview.
