I am inclining towards C.
1) "a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose "......were
2) "were" ........outgrowths

In B, "a natural growth" is wrong.
In D, "it" incorrectly refers to "religious zeal".
E incorrectly modifies "religious zeal".

yes .. C not B ( wrote B by mistake).. looks fine ... were refers to "x and y" and it refers to religious zeal ..
