International students in the USA and furniture [#permalink]
10 Apr 2011, 04:24
Wanted to start a new topic related to furniture buying/renting for all international students coming to get their graduate degree in the US. Wondering what internationals do when it comes to furnishing a rented property. Usually, rented properties already come with a furnished kitchen, but the rest is up to the renter. Do you buy some of the furniture such as a bed, table, chairs, sofa etc or do you rent it? Are there any good renting companies out there? Any places to find used decent-looking used furniture? I would greatly appreciate your feedback!

For used furniture, try http://charlottesville.craigslist.org/fua/ Also, you can always buy cheap at IKEA, and then sell your furniture to UVA students when you finish up your MBA.

Thanks a lot. For furniture rents there are companies like CORT and AFR that have all kinds of packages. One can rent a one-bedroom apartment set, which includes almost everything, for some $150-200 per month. Of course, over the long-run it would be cheaper to buy that stuff but renting would be an option as well.

forget CORT and those other corporate furniture rental joints. Unless you cant live without that kind of luxury, Ikea and Craigslist will get you by easily. I furnished a bedroom with 3 month old stuff from a summer student for $300 back in college (desk, chair, bed, dresser, lamp, etc.). Just resell or toss it when you are done, no need for contracts or hassles.

But my greatest concern is that, others say that mostly of what they have purchase has a defect. And I like that when I try this, I want mine to function well and produce the greatest furniture I would ever use. Decorators have long used furniture as accent pieces to give important rooms a finished and stylized look. Whatever your taste and whatever the style of your home, you’ll find the perfect furniture. Our eyes work better when what they’re looking at is properly lighted, so consider tiffany lamps a good investment for your health as well as for the aesthetics of your home. Perhaps Tiffany floor lamps would make a gracious accent to your décor, offer gentle, yet powerful lighting for every room in your house.
