Interview attire in cold cities [#permalink]
03 Feb 2007, 22:38
I'll be going to Chicago for an interview.
Is it too cold for me to just wear a suit?
If I wear an overcoat and the interviewer doesn't ask to take it or hang it, what do I do with it?
What are some nice overcoats I can buy? Links would be helpful. Thanks.
This one looks good. I guarantee it!

Mens Wearhouse is not that impressive.
Try custom fit suit from Ermenegildo Zegna:

An overcoat will not be really required, but if you want one, you can get one from
And get a relatively cheap (yet good) overcoat from Banana Republic. I have this and I love it.

Funnie question! When you wear an overcoat you should know how to handle it else just do not wear one. You will make yourself uncomfortable and make a fool out of youself!
For interview, why do you need an overcoat? Get a good suit, preferably custom fit (dark color, solid - or thin stripes) and a light single colored shirt (white or blue). If you want to be fancy, get a french cuffed shirt and make sure you have a decent pair of cuff-links.
Wear a matching tie and polished shoe. Make sure that you do not over apply cologne or after shave! Just a brush should be fine!
Oh BTW make sure you have black socks! I have seen people wearing white socks with formals and it looks hilarious!

$2,000 suit?
That's a car right there.
I have my $300 suit I got from Men's Wearhouse. Good enough for me.
So just a suit is fine in Chicago?

They could have picked a better model for a $2,000 suit. That suit looks too small on that guy.

It's -6 degree F outside right now! And not to forget it is the 'windy city'. You will surely need an overcoat or something.
These days I need to wear at least a fleece and a down jacket before getting out of the house..

Yeah. I don't think the guy who first responded to me realized I was asking about the overcoat out of necessity rather than fashion.

According to GQ, its alright to wear a parka over your suit. Just make sure its a neutral color. Also, pinstripes are on their way out. Get a solid gray or black suit and it'll last you longer.

Well, I won't know much about men's fashion. But I think Parka over a suit will kill the suit's look. An overcoat is definitely more classy.

Definitely buy an overcoat, you'll freeze to death if you're just wearing a suit. I wore an overcoat to a recent class visit and the ad-com's led me to a coat closet in their office.
In the unlikely scenario that they don't offer to take your overcoat, I would just lay it on the back of your chair before you sit down.

Parka? Lord no.
Buy a nice overcoat, most any decent one will do. Mens warehouse tends to look like mens warehouse, but for an overcoat, itll probably do. Personally I like the loden style, but its very hard to describe and i cant find a darn thing online - so dont go searching for loden unless you know what it is and what I mean.
In short, yes, its very cold in chicago right now - my car read -4 last night, and windchills are hitting -20 today. It wont stay this way - this is beyond normal - but it will be cold when you visit. A suit will not keep you warm.
I suggest a full length coat, at least to the knees, not something that stops at the waist. For instance:
http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/Pro ... 0640414391
Beyond that - No zippers, wool or cashmere, but not Stay classic look. It should look something like this on top of suit:
http://www.eshopone.com/images/overcoat ... detail.jpg
or like this:
http://www.indrafashion.com/images/men/ ... ercoat.jpg
(but i dont like brown personally)
or
http://www.mycustomclothing.com/images/shop/7817.jpg
(this is a shorter one, I think longer ones look much much better).
This is a terrible picture, but this is a good look:

Generally speaking, single breasted four button is safest best in my mind.
Beyond that, its very simple to deal with. When you get to the interview, they will likely offer to hang your coat up. If they dont, you simply take it off, drape it over your LEFT arm (if you stay standing up), and wait for your interviewer. When he/she shoes up, shake hands (this is why you drape over the left, not the right arm), and then place it on the back of your chair.
Easy as pie.
But for hte love of god.... no parka.

Because snow and rain will completely knacker cashmere.
Wool isn't so bad I find, but you wouldn't want to be out a long time in it, and it takes an age to dry.

Not if you take care of it. I have a cashmere one that I've worn in the snow, you just need to take good care of it tis all, but yea wool is a more durable choice.
