Investigators concluded that human failure was not responsible for the fatal airplane crash last August,
and since that time new and more stringent rules for identifying and reporting mechanical problems have
been in effect. That accounts for the fact that reports of airplane mechanical problems have increased in
frequency by 50 percent since last August.
Which one of the following is an assumption underlying the argument in the passage?
(A) Airplane travel is still relatively safe, despite the increase in reported mechanical problems.
(B) Mechanical problems in airplanes have increased dramatically since last August.
(C) Mechanical problems in airplanes have not increased by 50 percent since last August.
(D) Airlines are less reluctant to report mechanical problems than they previously were.
(E) Mechanical problems in airplanes have become easier to detect since last August.

Would appreciate an explanation for the answer.

ans is D...

fact one : human failure was not the cause for the crash...

fact two : since mechanical failures were ... stringent and new rules have been laid to detect these failures...

conclusion : and so there was an increase the number of reportings in mechanical failure since august.

A) bit away from thre statement...
B) wrong assumption.... may be but we don know for real....
C) neagtes the conclusion on head...
E)may be ... but tht is evident from the second line of the argm''

D) since the reportings of mechanical failures have been not so perfect before... and after the stringent and new rulez... they must have become more brisker.
D says '' since the reportings were not as perfect ... now they are so only 'cos of the strinegent N new rules''

agree with D here. If airlines are more reluctant to report mechanical problems, how can the argument conclude that "reports of airplane mechanical problems have increased in frequency by 50 percent"? E is out of scope. Even though the problems are harder to detect, more stringent rules could have eased the process so as not to make it an unbearable burden and the argument still stands

D looks right

Based on D we can say that Airlines are less reluctant to report mechanical problems than they previously were because of the more stringent rules for identifying and reporting mechanical problems

C?? author states that stringent rule is the reason why reports of mech. problems have increased. But ignores the fact that problems might actually have increased, and it is not b/c of the regulation. I think that's the underlying assumption.
D says that 'airlines are less reluctant...' :?: they might be reluctant, but they need to report the problem b/c of the regulation.
