IR Question - Question Type: Two Part Analysis [#permalink] New post 03 Mar 2013, 16:07
Alice leaves the Malefeco Corporation building and travels due east for 20 minutes, then due south for 30 minutes, then due east for 10 minutes, at a constant rate of speed. Joseph leaves the Malefeco Corporation building and travels due north for 40 minutes, then turns and travels due west for 30 minutes, at a constant rate of speed. Alice's speed is twice Joseph's speed.

Select possible approximate distances from Malefeco for Alice and Joseph at the end of their respective journeys consistent with the information above.

I am particularly confused by the usage of the word "distance" in the question stem as below - looks more of a displacement rather than a distance but I may be thinking too much

Select possible approximate distances from Malefeco for Alice and Joseph at the end of their respective journeys consistent with the information above.

Alice 42, Joseph 25

In terms of time:
Alice traveled 30 min (east) and 30 min (south)
Joseph traveled 40 min (north) and 30 min (west)

In terms of distance:
If Alice travel at 1 yard/min --> Joseph travel at 0.5 yard/min
Alice traveled 30\sqrt{2} yards (it's a 45-45-90 triangle), which is approximately 42 yards.
Joseph traveled 25 yards (30-60-90 triangle --> 15-20-25 or a 3-4-5 ratio)
