is 600 on GMAT good enough? [#permalink] New post 20 May 2013, 04:55
Hi all,
I might be asking a very silly question here. But I just got back from the GMAT scoring 600 (q:46 V:27) and was wondering if it was good enough.

My profile is:
Undergraduate from National institute of fashion technology.
Pursued my summer internship in indonesia.
Exp: 6 yrs as on march 2014
Worked in sales as well as the product division of a leading brand.
I am also a guest lecturer at NIFT.

Anyone who could give me an honest feedback is welcome.

- Adi

It depends on what school you are targeting. Take a look at the US News rankings, or Businessweek. They give information on average GMAT/GPA, acceptance rates, as well as placement statistics and average starting salaries. There are plenty of schools that will accept you with a 600 GMAT, though probably not the top tier.

It's not very good to be honest, but not terrible either.

Admissions wil look at your score and, if you had bewteen 650-700 depending on the school, they would just tick the box and move on with the rest of the application. Since you have 600, in many places they will be biased towards rejecting you unless you have a strong profile elsewhere. I reckon from your studies, that you are Indian so that makes it even harder. From the quick profile, you don't show leadership, career advancement, managerial abilities, EC activities, ... You need to focus on these aspects.

I guess the real question is what kind of schools you are targeting: 600 is terrible for HSW but good enough for middle-tier schools outside the US.

Well, since you only took the GMAT once so far, and since the GMAT goes soooo far in influencing the AdComs decision, why not try and retake after studying for a few more months?

Hey Adi, Don't give up whether it is attempting GMAT or applying to a college. Your GMAT score is low, but it does not become an eternal fact till you stop improving your GMAT Score.
Another advice: Don't leave your profile building exercise in between. It could literally crash you in the gates of your desired college.

PS. I gave both GMAT and CAT 5 times before getting admitted because I just didn't stop till I got what I wanted. So, keep the grill on and don't settle for less.

IMA PGPX Essays are a critical part of the overall application for the IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) one-year Post-Graduate Program for Executive (PGPX). Within a span of only 9 years (the program was launched in 2006), the PGPX has created a strong name for itself. It has been ranked as high as #11 in the world (2011) by the Financial Times full-time MBA rankings, and is currently ranked at #26. In the same ranking (FT Ranking 2015), the IIMA PGPX is ranked second in the world for career progression.
