Is a letter to a B-School board member a good idea?

I know that people use various connections to get what they want (school admission, promotion, new job, etc...) all the time. My situation is that I have concerns about getting into the B-School of my choice (mid-level school) because of a low GPA (2.63-mostly due to one bad year due to medical reasons), and what will most likely not be a stellar GMAT score (I take it this Sat., looks like I'll probably get around a 640). Although I feel that my work experience and other non-work leadership experiences will somewhat make up for this, I figure that I could use any bit of help I can get.
So, it turns out that a supervisor of mine (not my direct supervisor, but someone I've also done work for for about 5 years) knows a couple of people on the board of the B-school. This person has offered to write a letter on my behalf to ask for extra consideration of my application (which I think will not be in the automatic "circular file" category, but also not in the "oh my gosh, we have to admit them!" category either). This, of course, will be separate from my letters of recommendation with my application.
So, what do you all think about this? Do you think that it's a good idea? Or would they look down upon it? I appreciate any thoughts you might have!
