Hi, i am assuming second statement says

a^2 = b^2 since a^2 = y^2 doesnt make any sense.

If so, then answer is C.

Else if no assumption then E

If a=5 and b =0, then ab = 0, b^2=0 and a^2=25

in such a case, ab = b^2, but ab not equal to a^2

so statement 1 is not sufficient........both statements are required

answer is C

ab=a^2 if a=b or a=0

(1) ab=b^2 ====> b=0 (doesnt match) or a=b NOT OK
(2) a^2=b^2 ===> a=b or a=-b (doesnt match) NOT OK

Combine: a=b; thus, ab=a^2.

C
