Is an MBA right for me? [#permalink] New post 13 Feb 2013, 03:06
Here's my story:

I'm 24 years old.

- Attended a community college for 2 years then transferred to UCLA.
- Graduated from UCLA with a BA in Political Science this past year.
- I wanted to go to law school, but after taking the LSAT and completely blowing it, as well as all the bad press the law field had been getting, I'm having second thoughts on this career path.
- Now I'm looking into an MBA

Work experience:
2 years working at a retail store
3 month internship at a marketing company for Red Bull entertainment (recent)
3 month internship at a talent management company (recent)

Now I am well aware my experience is severely lacking, but would a top school take into consideration that about 2 years of my life was spent dealing with a life-threatening medical condition?

I would ideally join an internship program over summer while in an MBA program in hopes of finding a career in marketing afterwards.

Would this be realistic or just wishful thinking on my part?

As for your admissions to a top program given your circumstances, we believe that you really do not know unless you try. Saying that, there are definitely schools that are more receptive to situations like yours than others and you need to be smart about where you apply. As for what you need to do now to improve your chances, keep on working and study hard for the GMAT and get the highest score possible. Additionally, you need to start thinking about who will be writing your recommendation as well as pre-marketing yourself to schools (possibly through school visits and attendance at information sessions).

By reading all your post I have assumed that you have almost very much practical experience which is very helpful in such subjects. You have worked with a marketing company so I would suggest you the MBA marketing. Go for it and best of luck.

Why not??? It's true that you don't have standard MBA experience, but people get in all the time with the desire to do something new. The single thing that will most help you out at this point: kicking ass on the GMAT! :)

So make sure that happens, even if it takes a few tries.

Doing MBA would be beneficial for you as it would provide a directional approach and will be useful in getting confidence with whichever field you get associated. So prepare for GMAT and get into a good college for making a better future.
